August, 2025 Project Progress Update:
Anticipated Completion Date: December 2025
Project Description Modified from Mini Reservoir to Catch-basin and Pipes
The community of Villarumi, part of the Kañaris district of Lambayeque Province and Region, is a community of extreme poverty that has been greatly affected by climate change, with crop productivity being a challenge that must be addressed. We experience prolonged rainfall and drought, so one option is to build mini-reservoirs to allow water harvesting or source capture, installing sprinkler irrigation systems. This would ensure sufficient water during coffee flowering periods and increase production and quality, while also ensuring permanent irrigation for food production.
With the support of a Dutch student from Wageningen University who came for a three-month internship, it was determined that it wasn’t necessary to build a mini-reservoir, but rather a catchment area at the Granadilla spring, which was a permanent source of water. The most important thing was to channel the water through pipes to prevent it from being consumed along the way in the earthen canal.
The project will provide 160 4″ C-7.5 PVC pipes, which will allow us to carry the water over an 800-meter distance.
The photos represent the project’s work-in-progress. In September the pipes will be transported from Chiclayo to the Villarumi community, and installation will begin.
The next step is to reforest the spring area with bamboo to conserve water.
