Cyclone Yaku in Peru Causes Major Flooding & Infrastructure Issues
FUNDED: Food Relief Requests for the communities isolated by the presence of Cyclone Yaku in Northern Peru have been funded. Cyclone Yaku caused damage in the coastal regions and heavy rains have caused rivers and streams to overflow, mudslides and landslides in many communities, still isolated today, with serious difficulties in obtaining basic foods that they carry from the cities such as: oil, sugar, salt, rice, noodles to complement with cereals and stews that they reserve for the winter.
Currently there is infrastructure damage & destruction in the regions of Lambayeque, Cajamarca and the Amazonas. Some families have lost part of their farms due to rains and flooding, most are isolated by roads or bridges either damaged by landslides or sections being washed away. There are entire villages where the homes and farms flooded.
This request is not to solve all their problems, but together we provided basic food supplies and support so that the families did not feel alone and provided a level of confidence and strength that helped them stay strong and move forward. Together we funded $15,525 and provided aid to 47 communities - 1025 Families received food kits.
However, the need for Emergency Relief Funds is still urgent. Communities are still isolated due to road closures from landslides and flooding. Phase Two of their recovery is: Coffee Ecosystem Recovery, funds requested to replant coffee trees and recover the irrigation system damaged by Cyclone Yaku. Funds will provide the coffee producers with seeds, coffee seedlings and shade trees, hoses and pipes.

Disaster Support - Lambayeque | $4,025 | ![]() ![]() |
Grant Description:
This project DISASTER SUPPORT FOR COMMUNITIES ISOLATED BY THE PRESENCE OF CYCLONE YAKU in Northern Peru. Cyclone Yaku and heavy seasonal rains have cause rivers and creeks to overflow, mudslides and landsclides in many communities that today remain isolated and with serious difficulties in obtaining basic food and medicine. The representatives of the communities – mayors, judges, representative of organizations make journeys of 15-20 hours walking, dodging the danger, to reach the cities to request support from the government authorities. Produces are also organizing to fix the roads through minga (communal work). Life in the communities has become very expensive, they are aware that only by fixing their roads and highways can they reduce the costs to take their food and production to the market because they are close to the coffee harvest. Teachers also walk to communities to take responsibility. With disasters everything is altered in the life of communities: work, health and education. This request is seek support to cover the expenses of tickets and accommodations of the representative of the isolated communities who come to make arrangements in Chiclayo or Lambayeque and food for the producers who are participating in the communal tasks of road repair, repair of school classrooms, arrangement of the community irrigation system. |

Road Grader Fuel – Hierba Buena, Santa Rosa Espinal; Olos to Machucara, Kanaris, Lambayeque | $4,025 | ![]() ![]() |
Grant Description:
The project will provide SUPPORT FOR TH REPAIR OF ROADS DESTROYED BY DISASTERS IN THE RURAL COMMUNITIES LISTED ABOVE BY ADDING TO THE INTERVENT OF THE MUNICIPALITIES WITH MACHINER. In general, public institutions such as municipalities only provide the machinery and a small supply of fuel and then the machinery is taken out of the community until they can get another supply of fuel, taking much longer. Cyclone Yaku and the heavy seasonal rains or the s-called El Nino Phenomenon, present this year have caused greater damage than in previous cases in 1982, 1983 and 2017. The closure of roads caused by the overflow of rivers and streams, mudslides and landslides keeps many rural communities isolated and with serious difficulties in obtaining basic food and medicines. The authorities' lack of foresight in clearing rivers and streams, in cleaning irrigation canals, in digging channels for drainage means that the damage to the poorest population often means that their economy of deteriorate more and more and the work and investment made disappear. The urgent qualification of the roads would allow rural communities to take their production to the market and take the products they need to complement their diet at lower costs. It would also allow the start of school activities in better conditions and facilities to access health centers and medicines. With this request we seek the support of the Café Femenino Foundation to complement the budget allocated by the communities with fuel for the habilitation of roads in the shortest possible time, in the most difficult section of Carretera Marginal to Hierba Buena. Marginal road to Santa Rosa Espinal. From Olos to Machucara - Kañaris - Lambayeque, benefiting more than 08 communities. |

Rainwater Collection and Storage System | $4,025 | ![]() ![]() |
Grant Description:
In the coffee communities, climate change has been greatly affecting the production of coffee, fruit trees, grains and vegetables. The presentation of the increasingly extreme weather phenomena such as heavy rains, floods, mudslides, droughts, heat waves, aggravate water shortages. In the past, producers had adapted their crops to 6 months of rain and 6 months of drought. Currently there are 03 months of rain and 09 months of drought and now with situations like the current one, a lot of rain in short period of time and then very long periods of time where water is scarce. This project will provide 25 rainwater storage tanks allowing the coffee producers to safely store enough water and use it in sprinkler irrigation at times of greater scarcity and greater crop requirement.
