July 2024 UPDATE
The Machucara project of Replanting coffee trees and recovering the irrigation system damaged by Cyclone Yaku, to assist the producers who have suffered damage from landslides, water floods, landslides, with seeds, coffee seedlings and shade trees, hoses and pipes is in progress. This project is key in guaranteeing the income of the small producers and the sustainability of the family ensuring the coffee producers and young people stay in the communities and do not migrate to the cities, abandoning the fields when they see their investment lost due to another cyclone in their area. The heavy seasonal rains or so-called El Nino Phenomenon, which occurred this year have caused greater damage than in the previous years of 1982, 1983 and 2017. Machucara has faced many challenges.
The 28 families benefitting from this project are in charge of the preparation of the germinator bed, bagging and distribution of the seedlings by:
Preparing Coffee Nurseries
03 kg of coffee seed of the Marseillaise, Bourbon and Costa Rica varieties have been delivered from the demonstration plot of the Villarrumi Producers’ Committee, this plot has organic certification within the CECANOR-PROASSA Specialty Coffee Program. These varieties, depending largely on harvest and post-harvest management, have a high cup quality
In the demonstration plot of Villarrumi, a good productive behavior of these varieties has been evidenced, so it is being disseminated in committees with similar environmental characteristics.
7,500 coffee plants have been prepared, bagging has been carried out, they will be delivered to the families to be taken to the final field at the end of July.
Results To Date:
- The producers enthusiastic about renewing their old farms with new varieties such as Marseillaise and Bourbon.
- The technical management from the preparation of the germinator beds and the protection with the mesh is giving them good results so they are interested in making new germinators this year.
- They are grateful for the support given by donors and that it was essential to recover from the problems caused by Cyclone Yaku.
- Producers have made a commitment to prepare organic fertilizers to improve coffee quality, improving the organic matter of their soils is necessary.

COFFEE NURSERIES – MACHUCARA
03 Kg. of coffee seeds of the Marseillaise, Bourbon and Costa Rica varieties have been delivered from the demonstration plot of the Villarrumi Producers Committee, this plot has organic certification within the CECANOR-PROASSA Special Coffee Program. 7,500 thousand coffee plants are being prepared, we are close to bagging them and will be taken to the final field in 5 or 6 months.
The delivery of irrigation material is being scheduled for the month of May, before the installation of the seedlings, which will be done in the month of June-July.
