The Nahuala Community Library services are aimed especially at children, young people, teachers and parents in the community and surrounding areas. It is an immediate resource for students at the primary and secondary level in terms of school work research, loan on books and also in the implementation of reading and writing programs with children and mothers of the community. The library serves the needs of the children now and also for the children in future. Without the financial support provided by this grant they would not be able to cover the operating expenses to continue strengthening the education of the Guatemalan children.
Right now, more than ever, the support was needed. This provided opportunities for the children to continue studying and reading the books are made available through the library (and, mobile library). In schools, school activities were suspended but they were able to provided needed resources to enhance the education resources during the pandemic. Activities were provided by implementing Covid safety measures (social distancing and masking), virtual learning and one-on-one visits to the children’s homes. The reading programs for the children and mothers continued ensuring that the students were able to continue to learn and not fall behind in their education.
The funds were used to provide an income to the Librarian and masks for the children. The cooperative purchases necessary school materials and disinfectants for the school. The library and library services were used by 700 people monthly within the community of Solola and surrounding communities.
